Eyelid surgery, also referred to as an eye lift, a lower eye lift, or an upper eye lift, is a specialty of the Straith Clinic. Known technically as a blepharoplasty, this cosmetic eyelid surgery is performed to remove excess skin and bulging fat in the upper and/or lower lids which helps to visually lift the eyes. The muscle may also be tightened depending on need. The result is a less tired and more youthful appearance to the periorbital region. This eyelift plastic surgery can be performed in isolation, or more commonly at the same time as a face lift. During the eyelift surgery, our plastic surgeon makes lower eyelid incisions just below the eyelashes, extending slightly into the crowsfeet lines. The transconjuctival approach involves an incision on the inside of the lower lid. This method leaves no external scar but only removes fat. For the upper eyelid, the plastic surgeon makes incisions in the normal lid crease. The excess fat and skin are removed.

What to expect from cosmetic eyelid surgery:

  • Anesthesia: Usually local with IV sedation.
  • Length of eyelid surgery: 1 to 2 hours.
  • In/Outpatient: Generally out-patient in our accredited eyelift plastic surgery suite or in a hospital setting.
  • Recovery: Reading: 2 to 3 days. Contact lenses: 2 weeks or more. Back to work: 5 to 10 days. Strenuous activity: about 3 weeks.
  • Duration of Results: Several years, sometimes permanent.

Frequently asked questions about eye lifts and cosmetic eyelid surgery to lift the eyes:

Q1: What happens during the post-surgery period?

The eyes are not bandaged. There will be swelling and discoloration around the eye area which will diminish gradually. Redness of the eyes, if present, disappears gradually. Slight blurring of vision, tearing and sensitivity to bright light may occur during the eye lift recovery period. The intensity and duration of these conditions vary with each individual. All sutures are usually removed by the eyelid surgeon on the seventh day.

Q2: When can I wash my hair and/or use makeup?

The hair can usually be washed anytime after surgery. The healing process may cause your eyelid surgeon to change these instructions. New facial makeup can be applied to cover up any bruising as early as three days after surgery, but not on the incisions. It is important to gently remove all makeup.

Q3: When can I resume my social activities?

Normally, full social and employment activities can be resumed three to seven days after a cosmetic eyelid surgery. Strenuous exercise and activities such as sports should be avoided for two to three weeks. The healing process and your occupation may cause the length of time to vary.
