Michigan Breast Implant Surgery

Breast Augmentation in Michigan also known as AUGMENTATION MAMMOPLASTY, Breast Enlargement, or Breast Enhancement. «Scroll down to view more procedures»

A breast augmentation("breast enlargement") is performed to increase the size and fullness of the breasts. Uneven breast sizes may also be improved by the use of different volumes in each implant. The breast enhancement procedure can boost self-confidence by improving the balance of your figure and restoring breast size and projection that has been caused by weight loss, pregnancy, and/or the aging process.

The Straith Clinic in Bingham Farms, Michigan located between Southfield and Bloomfield Hills, performs breast augmentation in Metro Detroit's state of the art accredited surgical suite. No matter what area of Metro Detroit you are from: including Warren, Grosse Pointe, Taylor, Livonia, Troy, or Rochester Hills, the Straith Clinic is close by for Breast Enlargement Surgery.

The choice of final breast size depends on a number of factors:

  • Amount of breast tissue available
  • Patient's body proportions
  • Judgment of the surgeon
  • Patients Preference

The Breast Implant Procedure

An incision is made in the fold of the skin below the breast, in the axilla, or the edge of the areola. Placement of the implants through the navel is not approved by the FDA or the breast implant manufacturers. A surgical "pocket" is constructed either under the breast tissue (subglandular) or under the pectoralis major muscle (submuscular). The implants are placed into this "pocket" and the small incisions are sutured closed.  Placement of the implants through the navel is not approved by the breast implant manufacturers.

Silicone Breast Implants or Saline Breast Implants

Both Silicone Breast Implants and Saline Breast Implants are FDA approved for cosmetic breast enlargement. Silicone breast implants are filled with silicone gel and saline breast implants are filled with sterile salt (saline) water. Currently, both silicone breast implants and saline breast implants in a variety of shapes and sizes are utilized at the Straith Clinic. Straith Clinic surgeons specialize in breast augmentation and will discuss with you the advantages and disadvantages between silicone implants and saline implants during your free breast augmentation consultation. They will help you make an informed decision that will be safe and effective and that will give you a natural result.

BREAST REDUCTION (REDUCTION MAMMOPLASTY)

Breast reduction in Michigan women has long been a specialty of the Straith Clinic near Bloomfield Hills, MI and serving patients from all over Metro Detroit, including: Clarkston, Mount Clemens, Northville, Canton and Sterling Heights. A breast reduction is performed to reduce the size and improve the appearance of unusually large breasts. Large breasts cause aches and pains in the back and upper neck and cause deep grooves on the shoulders from brassiere straps that support the excessively heavy breasts. The breast reduction alleviates these symptoms and also improves the overall appearance. Incisions are made around the nipple area (the areola) and down under the fold. Many patients are candidates for the short scar breast reduction which eliminates the incision in the breast fold. In the overwhelming majority of cases, when the nipple is repositioned to its more normal position, it is still attached to the underlying breast tissue. This technique generally preserves nipple sensation and the potential for nursing. When the breasts are exceptionally large, the nipple may be completely removed and reapplied as a skin graft. Symmetry should be significantly improved with this surgery although it can never be completely perfect.

· Anesthesia: Generally local anesthesia with IV sedation.
· Length of surgery: 3 to 4 hours.
· In/Outpatient: Generally out-patient in our AAAHC accredited office surgical suite or in a hospital setting.
· Recovery: Back to work 1 to 2 weeks. More strenuous activity: 3 to 6 weeks. Fading of scars: several months to a year.
· Duration of Results: Usually permanent although gravity, pregnancy, aging, and weight changes may affect the results.

BREAST UPLIFT (MASTOPEXY)

Breast uplift surgery for women in Michigan and Metro Detroit is conventient and private at the Straith Clinic. A breast lift is performed to correct breast sagging, low nipple position, and to increase firmness without changing the size. The surgery involves a rearrangement of the soft tissues, repositioning the nipple, and tightening the overlying skin. In some cases, this procedure may be combined with the use of an implant to enlarge the breast when readjustment of the normal tissues alone will not suffice. Many patients are candidates for the short scar mastopexy which minimizes the amount of incisions that are required.

· Anesthesia: Generally local anesthesia with IV sedation.
· Length of surgery: 2 to 3 hours.
· In/Outpatient: Generally out-patient in our AAAHC accredited office surgical suite or in a hospital setting.
· Recovery: Back to work 1 to 2 weeks. More strenuous activity: 3 to 6 weeks. Fading of scars: several months to a year.
· Duration of Results: Usually permanent although gravity, pregnancy, aging, and weight changes may cause new sagging.

MALE BREAST REDUCTION (GYNECOMASTIA)

The Straith Clinic performs male breast reduction (Gynecomastia) in Oakland County's state of the art AAAHC accredited surgical suite. A male breast reduction is performed to reduce or eliminate excess male breast tissue. During puberty, mild enlargement of male breast tissue often occurs but usually disappears over a period of one to two years. When it persists, its appearance can cause embarrassment or extreme self-conciousness in social situations. Some types of male breast enlargement are caused by irregular hormonal changes or an underlying disease. Therefore, some patients may need to have a medical work-up performed by an endocrinologist to rule out causes of gynecomastia that should be treated through other means. In most cases, the cause of the enlargement is not due to disease and can be treated with plastic surgical procedures.

An incision is made following the lower border of the areola and the excess breast tissue is removed. The incision usually heals with very little noticeable scarring. When the composition of the breasts is mostly fat, liposuction can be performed instead of excision. In some cases, the combination of both procedures is performed.

· Anesthesia: Generally local anesthesia with IV sedation.
· Length of surgery: 1 to 2 hours.
· In/Outpatient: Generally out-patient in our AAAHC accredited office surgical suite or in a hospital setting.
· Recovery: Back to work 3 to 7 days. More strenuous activity: 2 to 6 weeks.
· Duration of Results: Permanent.

RISKS INVOLVED WITH SURGERY

No surgical procedure is risk free. Although cosmetic surgery is an elective procedure, every patient must understand that these procedures are real surgical operations that involve the potential for complications. However, most cosmetic surgery procedures are categorized as low risk when performed in an accredited facility, by a surgeon with the appropriate training and qualifications.

Surgical risks can be categorized broadly into general risks and specific risks. General risks are the potential complications that are common to all surgical procedures, such as infection, bleeding, wound healing problems, and anesthetic complications. Specific risks are the potential complications that are unique to a specific operation. A more detailed discussion about the specific and general risks of your surgery will be carried out during your surgical consultation.

Although complications are uncommon, they can delay or affect the final result. An appropriately trained surgeon not only knows how to perform a given operation, but also knows how to manage any complications that may arise from it. Fortunately, when complications do occur, additional surgery is rarely required.

The risk of complications can be minimized with a combination of the proper knowledge, skill, sound surgical practices and by closely following your surgeon’s instructions on follow-up care during the recovery period. Cessation of smoking is strongly recommended and may be compulsory prior to procedures.

With an established medical record of over 70 years, board certified surgeons, and an accredited facility, thousands of patients throughout Metro Detroit have had cosmetic surgery at the Straith Clinic with very rewarding results.
