Microdermabrasion, also known as Microderm

Microdermabrasion is a gentle sanding of the face, neck, and chest to improve sun damaged skin and skin texture.  It is more extensive than exfoliating creams but far less invasive than a full facial dermabrasion or chemical peels.   A microdermabrasion is performed as an office procedure by an experienced esthetician and patients can resume their normal activities immediately. Multiple sessions are recommended to obtain the best result.

Dermabrasion (Sanding)

Dermabrasion performed involves mechanical sanding of the top layers of skin. The effect is to soften the sharp edges of surface irregularities commonly seen in facial acne scarring, other types of scars, and fine wrinkles. In demabrasion, a wire brush or a diamond wheel with rough edges is used to remove the upper layers of the skin. The brush or burr rotates rapidly, taking off and leveling (abrading or planing) the top layers of the skin. Dermabrasion is suited for around the mouth area and especially the vertical wrinkles (smoker’s lines) on the upper lip.

Dermabrasion (Sanding) Details:

• Anesthesia: Usually local with IV sedation.
• Length of surgery: 15 minutes to 1 hour. May require more than one session.
• In/Outpatient: Usually out-patient in our accredited office operating room suite.
• Recovery: Back to work: Approximately 2 weeks. Fading of redness: About 3 months.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are performed using a chemical solution to peel away the skin’s top layers. This procedure works best on fair skin with superficial wrinkles. Results vary and depend on the exact concentration of the selected solution’s formula.  Chemical peels, depending on the doctor’s discretion, the type of peel, and your goals may be performed multiple times to obtain a desired result. 

Chemical peels can alter your skin significantly. A period of inflammation, crusting, and redness will occur in varying degrees. Specific instructions will be given depending on the treatment performed.  Makeup can be used only when the peeling is complete, approximately ten to fourteen days after the procedure.  Makeup will cover the redness that occurs during the healing process. Normally, full social and employment activities can be resumed seven to ten days after treatment. Strenuous exercise and activities such as sports should be avoided for two to four weeks.  The healing process and your occupation may cause the length of time to vary.

Types of Chemical Peel Solutions/Formulas offered at our Clinic:

Phenol Chemical Peel
Known as the strongest of chemical peel solutions and usually provides the deepest skin peels. Effects of Phenol solution chemical peels are long lasting and can be dramatic.

Trichloroacetic Acid also known as (“TCA”) Chemical Peel. This chemical peel is mostly utilized for medium or moderate depth peeling results.  The peel results of the TCA solution are not as dramatic and long lasting as the peel results of the Phenol solution chemical peel. 

Chemical Peel Details:

• Anesthesia: Usually local with IV sedation.
• Length of surgery: 1 to 2 hours for full face.
• In/Outpatient: Generally out-patient in our accredited office operating room suite or in a hospital setting. For full-face phenol peel, an overnight stay is provided at no charge.
• Recovery: Phenol: Back to work: approximately 2 weeks. Formation of new skin; 7 to 21 days. Normal activities: 2 to 4 weeks. Full healing and fading of redness: 3 to 6 months. TCA: Back to work: 1 to 2 weeks. New skin within 5 to10 days.
• Duration of Results: Phenol: Permanent, although new wrinkles may form as skin ages. TCA: Variable.
