The Traditional Facelift (rhytidectomy)

The traditional face lift uses a combination of techniques that target:

  • Sagging skin of the cheeks
  • Jaw line
  • Neck Area (Neck Lift)

The traditional face lift/neck lift usually gives you a more youthful facial appearance by:

  • Lifting Cheeks
  • Softening the nasolabial lines
  • Eliminating jowling
  • Tightening the neck skin

In general, the traditional facelift/neck lift result is longer lasting, but requires a higher degree of invasive techniques and more recovery when compared to the ‘mini’ techniques.

Straith Clinic Face Lift Procedure Details:

A face lift can be broken down into tow separate procedures:

  • Cheek Lift - Focuses its improvement on lifting the upper cheeks, softening the nasolabial folds, improving the jowls.
  • Neck Lift - A neck lift in isolation will help to remove fat and tighten skin below the jaw line.

These procedures can be performed in isolation when only a specific area of the face needs to be addressed.

MINI-FACE LIFT
The Straith Clinic doctors perform mini-face lifts in our Detroit area surgical center, which is part of our Birmingham / Bloomfield area facility. This procedure, which is less invasive than the traditional facelift, will help rejuvenate the cheek, jowls and nasolabial folds, and to a lesser extent, the neck. The main advantage to this procedure over a regular face lift is a shorter recovery time. A mini-face lift is generally more suited for younger patients who have mild facial aging with minimal signs of aging in the neck.

Mini face lift data:
· Anesthesia: Can be performed under local anesthesia only. However, patients prefer IV sedation so as not to experience pain and discomfort.
· Length of surgery: 1 to 2 hours.
· In/Outpatient: Out-patient in our accredited office surgical suite.
· Recovery: A few days
· Duration of Results: Results are more subtle and will not last as long as traditional face lift.

BROW LIFT
The Straith Clinic doctors perform brow lift surgery in our Michigan surgery suites. Currently there are two types of brow lifts. The endoscopic brow lift is more frequently performed and has the advantage of less recovery and minimal scars. It involves small incisions in the hair that are used to help elevate the forehead and eyebrow tissues. These tissues are then re-attached back to their previous, youthful position. No tissue is excised. The coronal brow lift involves an incision across the top of the head. This procedure is performed less frequently and is generally reserved for older individuals who have more significant drooping of the brows. Both procedures will remove portions of the muscles that cause frown lines between the eyebrows. These procedures will improve the appearance of this area as well as the upper eyelids.

· Anesthesia: Generally local anesthesia with IV sedation.
· Length of surgery: 1 to 2 hours.
· In/Outpatient: Generally out-patient in our accredited office operating room suite or in a hospital setting.
· Recovery: Back to work: 5 to 10 days depending on the procedure. Strenuous activity: 3 to 4 weeks.
· Duration of result: Several years, sometimes permanent.

EYELID SURGERY (BLEPHAROPLASTY)
Eyelid surgery for Michigan /Birmingham/Troy patients and patients from all over the state of Michigan, including Pontiac, Sterling Heights, Dearborn and St. Clair Shores is a specialty of the Straith Clinic. A blepharoplasty is performed to remove excess skin and bulging fat in the upper and/or lower lids. The muscle may also be tightened depending on need. The result is a less tired and more youthful appearance to the periorbital region. The surgery can be performed in isolation or more commonly, at the same time as a face lift. Lower eyelid blepharoplasty incisions are made just below the eyelashes, extending slightly into the crowsfeet lines. The transconjuctival approach involves an incision on the inside of the lower lid. This method leaves no external scar but only removes fat. Upper eyelid blepharoplasty incisions are made in the normal lid crease. The excess fat and skin are removed.

· Anesthesia: Generally local anesthesia with IV sedation.
· Length of surgery: 1 to 2 hours
· In/Outpatient: Generally out-patient in our accredited office operating room suite or in a hospital setting.
· Recovery: Reading: 2 to 3 days. Contact lenses: 2 weeks or more. Back to work: 5 to 10 days. Strenuous activity: about 3 weeks.
· Duration of Results: Several years, sometimes permanent.

A septoplasty is often performed at the same time as a rhinoplasty in order to reconstruct a deviated septum and to improve breathing.

Incisions may be made on the inside or outside of the nose in inconspicuous areas. The internal structure is the changed by altering the cartilage and correcting the bone. These maneuvers help to reshape the nose into a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. The septum and nasal structures obstructing breathing are corrected to improve breathing as well as to straighten nasal deviations. During the postoperative period, the skin readjusts itself over the newly contoured bone and cartilage.

RISKS INVOLVED WITH SURGERY

No surgical procedure is risk free. Although cosmetic surgery is an elective procedure, every patient must understand that these procedures are real surgical operations that involve the potential for complications. However, most cosmetic surgery procedures are categorized as low risk when performed in an accredited facility, by a surgeon with the appropriate training qualifications.

Surgical risks can be categorized broadly into general risks and specific risks. General risks are the potential complications that are common to all surgical procedures, such as infection, bleeding, wound healing problems, and anesthetic complications. Specific risks are the potential complications that are unique to a specific operation. A more detailed discussion about the specific and general risks of your surgery will be carried out during your surgical consultation.

Although complications are uncommon, they can delay or affect the final result. An appropriately trained surgeon not only knows how to perform a given operation, but also knows how to manage any complications that may arise from it. Fortunately, when complications do occur, additional surgery is rarely required.

The risk of complications can be minimized with a combination of the proper knowledge, skill, sound surgical practices and by closely following your surgeon’s instructions on follow-up care during the recovery period. Cessation of smoking is strongly recommended and may be compulsory prior to procedures.

With an established track record of over 70 years, board certified surgeons, and an accredited facility, thousands of patients throughout Michigan at the Straith Clinic have had cosmetic surgery with very rewarding results.
