The Straith Clinic performs male breast reduction (Gynecomastia) in
Oakland County's state of the art AAAHC accredited surgical suite.
A male breast reduction is performed to reduce or eliminate
excess male breast tissue. During puberty, mild enlargement
of male breast tissue often occurs but usually disappears over
a period of one to two years. When it persists, its appearance
can cause embarrassment or extreme self-conciousness in social
situations. Some types of male breast enlargement are caused
by irregular hormonal changes or an underlying disease. Therefore,
some patients may need to have a medical work-up performed by
an endocrinologist to rule out causes of gynecomastia that should
be treated through other means. In most cases, the cause of
the enlargement is not due to disease and can be treated with
plastic surgical procedures.
An incision is made following the lower border of the areola
and the excess breast tissue is removed. The incision usually
heals with very little noticeable scarring. When the composition
of the breasts is mostly fat, liposuction can be performed
instead of excision. In some cases, the combination of both
procedures is performed.
