The Procedure
An incision is made in the fold of the skin below the breast. The breast tissue is elevated from the rib cage, a surgical “pocket” is constructed under either the breast tissue or muscle, and the implant placed into this “pocket”.
Candidates for Breast Augmentation Surgery
The ideal candidate for breast augmentation surgery is any individual in good overall health seeking to improve the appearance of their breasts. It is important that you maintain realistic expectations and are not pregnant or breastfeeding if you choose to undergo a breast augmentation. Most women will have this procedure done due to shape or volume loss in the breasts due to pregnancy, weight loss, or aging. Other reasons that someone may seek out a breast augmentation are because they are unhappy with the fullness at the top of their breasts, or because they have asymmetrical breasts.
Breast Implant Placement Options
When it comes to choosing the type of implant for your breast augmentation, there are three main options. The first is the saline breast implant. Saline implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution that will be reabsorbed by the body in the event of an implant rupture. Saline implants are uniform in shape, firmness, and feel. The next type of implant to be aware of is the silicone breast implant. Silicone implants feel the most like natural breast tissue of all implant types. If your silicone implant begins to leak, it will not cause a collapse in the appearance of the breast. The last option is a gummy bear breast implant. Gummy bear implants are thicker and heavier than traditional silicone but will retain their shape even if the implant shell is broken. They have a distinct shape of being full at the bottom and more tapered toward the top.
Saline Implants Vs. Silicone Implants
In the fall of 2006, after rigorous review of data collected over 10 years, the FDA approved silicone gel breast implants for cosmetic breast enlargement. Silicone breast implants are filled with silicone gel and saline breast implants are filled with sterile salt (saline) water. Currently, both silicone and saline breast implants in a variety of shapes are utilized at the Straith Clinic. Dr. Sabbagh will discuss with you the advantages and disadvantages among saline implants, traditional gel silicone, and the next generation of silicone – cohesive gel implants, also known as gummy bear implants.
Words cannot begin to express my gratitude for the excellent job you did with my breast augmentation. Dr. Sabbagh you have such a nice and professional demeanor I felt comfortable immediately. The staff was courteous and welcoming and somebody was always available to answer questions and put any and all of my worries to rest. I put this surgery off for so many years because the thought of surgery was so scary. I researched and looked into so many doctors before choosing you and I have to say that trusting in you and your staff was the best decision I could have ever made.
Subglandular Placement
Subglandular placement of breast implants means that the implant is placed under the breast tissue in front of the muscle. The muscle is not stretched or disturbed when inserting the implant. This placement is best for those wanting a faster recovery and a more natural look. It is also a better placement for highly athletic or active women as the pectoral muscles are manipulated during surgery.
Submuscular Placement
Submuscular placement means that the breast implant is inserted under the pectoral muscles. This is recommended for particularly thin or lean women, as the muscle is more able to conceal the characteristics of the implant. Because the implant is placed under the muscle, upper body movements and aggressive exercise can lead to breast implant movement or “animation”.
What to Expect Following a Breast Augmentation
For the first few weeks after a breast augmentation, you can expect to experience some swelling, soreness, and bruising. If you had submuscular implants, you may be a little sore due to the stretching of the pectoral muscles. You may be sent home with drains in place to collect any excess fluid or blood. These will be removed at your follow-up appointment. You will also be asked to wear a surgical compression garment during our recovery to maintain the shape and placement of your implants while your body gets used to them.
What are the Risks?
No surgical procedure is risk-free and that includes cosmetic surgery like breast augmentation surgery. During your consultation with Dr. Sabbagh, he will review the risks so you can make an educated decision. With an established track record of over 80 years, an accredited facility, and thousands of satisfied patients throughout Dearborn, metro Detroit, Michigan and the U.S., the Straith Clinic has earned an excellent reputation for cosmetic surgery of the face and body.
How long is recovery from breast augmentation?
During recovery from breast augmentation surgery, patients can often return to work within 5-7 days, resume physical contact with the breast after 3-4 weeks, and resume strenuous activity after 3-6 weeks. Recovery can be discussed during your breast augmentation consultation with Dr. Sabbagh.
