If you have excessive sweating that’s not controlled by over the counter antiperspirant, then you may have a condition called hyperhidrosis.  Living with hyperhidrosis can be difficult and stressful, which can make the sweating even worse! At the Straith Clinic, we want you to know there is an FDA approved treatment available to stop underarm hyperhidrosis in its tracks.  Can you imagine going about your daily activities without having to worry about underarm sweat and odor? Our medical professionals offer miraDry as a safe solution to your hyperhidrosis and underarm odor.

What Is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a common condition related to extreme sweating under your arms, hands, feet, and face. It can affect other parts of your body too. The condition generally starts in adolescence and continues into adulthood. Hyperhidrosis is sometimes called sudorrhea or polyhedrosis.  No matter the term used, excessive sweating can make your day miserable.  The constant stress from worrying about the appearance of excessive sweat showing through clothes or feeling self-conscious about the underarm odor in social situations can have a psychological effect as well!

What Is miraDry?

MiraDry is an FDA approved and effective treatment for permanently reducing underarm sweat and odor.  It isn’t a drug, uncomfortable ointment, or painful injection.  MiraDry is a highly-evolved non-invasive, thermal technology with few side effects. The treatment will keep sweat and odor away from your underarms all day long. You’ll be amazed at how it feels to be cool, dry and worry-free! Many of our patients no longer need to wear deodorant after their treatment.

How Does It Work?

This cutting-edge treatment works by removing sweat glands from under your arms. Thermal heat is used to break down and eliminate the majority of the sweat glands from under the arms. The process is done in our medical office and takes about one hour. To prepare for your miraDry treatment, you should shave your underarms regularly. Wash daily with an antibacterial soap to stay germ-free and reduce the possibility of infection.

What Does Recovery Look Like?

After your miraDry treatment, you will have some soreness under your arms. The area that was treated will become swollen.  With the help of ice packs and time, the swelling improves significantly over a few days and is mostly gone by 2 weeks.  Your underarms may also become bruised or red, but this should disappear within two weeks. The pain can be treated with over the counter medications and ice packs. Some patients experience numbness or tingling after their miraDry treatments, but this should improve after a few weeks. The miraDry hyperhidrosis treatment is long-lasting – as the removal of the sweat glands addressed by the treatment is permanent.  Some patients with severe hyperhidrosis require a second treatment.  Some patients ask, “don’t I need my sweat glands?”  You still have sweat glands over the rest of your body, and will continue to sweat in those other areas.  The sweating in those other areas will accomplish the body’s purpose when sweating – thermal regulation.  The sweat glands under your arms are slightly different, as they also produce odor.  There is no physiologic need for the odor.  Therefore, removing the sweat glands under your arms creates the desired effect of removing excessive underarm sweat that can be provoked by social situations and visible in clothing, while also addressing the underarm odor!  Furthermore, miraDry has a great safety record.
