When a silicone implant ruptures, patients should have the implant removed or replaced for a variety of reasons. The silicone can cause small masses on the breast which can mimic breast cancer and spread throughout the breast. Also, if the silicone leaks out of the implant shell, it can migrate to other areas of the body like the lymph nodes and lungs, where it is then impossible to remove.

2. How long should I wait to have a ruptured silicone implant replaced?

When a patient discovers that their silicone implant has ruptured, it is best to have it replaced as soon as possible. The longer a patient waits to have it replaced, the higher the change that the silicone will leak and cause scar tissue to form around the implant. Recovery from breast implant replacement is quick- about 3-5 days.

3. How can I prevent rippling with breast implants?

The best way to prevent rippling is to discuss your breast implant type and placement options with your surgeon during your consultation. The surgeon should place the breast implant beneath the chest muscles and be sure that the implant is the correct size. Overfilled saline implants are known to cause rippling in the breasts.

4. Will I lose nipple sensation after a breast augmentation?

With breast augmentation, there is the chance that sensory changes of the breast may occur. In most cases, sensation does return after about 3-6 months. Women who had their implants placed with the inframammary fold incision had the lowest rate of nipple sensory loss.

5. Can high profile breast implants be used instead of a breast lift to correct sagging breasts?

When it comes to sagging breasts, a breast lift is usually the best choice for correction. High profile implants, or implants of any kind, can only improve the size of the breasts, and cannot usually provide the lift that women with sagging breasts require.
