Facial fat transfer is offered as an alternative to hyaluronic acid or collagen-based fillers for facial rejuvenation. This procedure will take fat cells from one area if the body and inject it into an area of the face lacking volume. This plastic surgery procedure is popular as a body surgery but can also be an effective facial rejuvenation technique. It’s often combined with procedures like the facelift or eyelid lift.
What Causes Facial Aging?
Dr. Marissa Baca of Straith Clinic explains the causes of facial aging.
Areas to Improve with Facial Fat Grafting
When used as a facial filler, facial fat grafting can improve the creased and sunken areas of the face and add fullness to the lips and cheeks. Fat transfer is used for the same type of static wrinkles and folds that dermal fillers are used to improve. However, fat injections are a more permanent solution than fillers. Once the transferred fat establishes a new blood supply, it will act as natural facial fat. This makes it a popular option for aging patients with facial volume loss who want a more youthful appearance.

Fat grafting is generally performed on an out-patient basis, in our accredited on-site surgery center.
Who is a Good Candidate for Facial Fat Transfer?
Patients who have tried dermal fillers in the past but want more permanent results are excellent candidates for a facial fat transfer procedure. In order to perform fat transfer, it’s essential to have sufficient fat on an area of the body such as the stomach, hips, or thighs. As such, especially lean patients may not be good candidates for facial fat transfer. During a consultation, your plastic surgeon will assess your facial anatomy and body composition to determine if you have enough fatty tissue for your intended results.

How long is Facial Fat Transfer recovery?
The amount of fat transferred and may cause the length of time to vary. Your occupation may also impact when you can return to work. On average, patients usually recover in 1 week for the largest transfers.
What Are the Benefits & Risks?
The main benefit to using facial fat transfer procedures in comparison to dermal fillers is the minimal risk for an adverse reaction. This is because the material being used for enhancement is not foreign to your body. In addition to the low risk for a reaction, autologous fat transfer is longer lasting than gel-based fillers. No surgical procedure is risk-free, and that includes cosmetic plastic surgery like facial fat grafting.
