Breast reduction surgery, also called reduction mammoplasty, is performed to help women with very large breasts reduce the size of one or both breasts, creating a better shape and contour. Breast reduction is commonly requested because large breasts can cause physical symptoms (such as back or neck pain) and emotional distress. Plastic surgery with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons helps women achieve an improved appearance that they can feel good about, improving their quality of life.

Which Breast Procedure Is Right For Me?

Dr. Marissa Baca explains the different types of breast procedures that patients at the Straith Clinic may be interested in.

The Breast Reduction Procedure

During the breast reduction surgery, excess breast tissue, fat, and skin is removed, the nipple-areola complex is shifted to a higher position, and the leftover tissue and skin is moved to reshape the breast. A breast lift may also be included in your breast reduction surgery. The anchor incision (or Wise incision) is made around the areola, down to the crease, and in the crease beneath the breast. This helps to raise the nipple to a higher position. After breast reduction surgery, the size of the breasts will be more proportional to your body.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do you lose feeling in your nipples after breast reduction?
After a breast reduction, it is common to experience temporary changes in nipple sensation. For most women, sensation gradually returns over time.
  • How do I know if I need a breast reduction?
If you feel that your breasts are large and interfere in daily activities or cause neck, back or shoulder pain, you may benefit from a breast reduction. Set up a consultation with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon to determine if you are a good breast reduction candidate.
  • How long does it take to recover from a breast reduction?
Most patients are ready to return to work after 1-2 weeks. If your job requires heavy lifting or activity, you will need to refrain from performing tasks requiring heavy lifting or heavy activity for 3-6 weeks after surgery.
  • Do you lose weight after breast reduction?
A breast reduction is not a weight loss procedure. There will be some decrease that is due to the amount of breast tissue removed. Interestingly, your new, smaller chest size may contribute to the appearance of having lost weight.

How Long is The Recovery from Breast Reduction?

Your surgeon will provide a complete list of steps to follow during your breast reduction recovery. Each patient’s recovery period varies, but most patients can return to light daily activities within 2 weeks and resume more strenuous activities after 4-6 weeks. Full recovery may take up to 3 months, depending on your body’s healing process. After breast reduction surgery, you will see a noticeable improvement in symptoms like shoulder pain, skin irritation, breast pain, poor body image, and more. The recovery period can be discussed during your consultation with Dr. Sabbagh and Dr. Baca.

What Are the Risks?

Like any surgery, breast reduction has some risks. During your consultation with Dr. Sabbagh or Dr. Baca, they will go over all of the potential risks with you to help you make an educated decision about your procedure
