Are You Too Old or Young for Plastic Surgery?
Go BackA very common question among patients is, “Am I too old (or young) for plastic surgery?” Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. William Sabbagh answers this frequently asked question, age and plastic surgery, below.
Are You Too Young for Plastic Surgery?
The short answer would be when there are no significant signs of aging. Therefore, no treatment would be indicated or recommended. There are some younger women who begin Botox treatments in their 30s with the intent of preventing the formations of wrinkles. However, there is no proof that this will delay the onset of wrinkling in certain areas.
Are You Too Old for Plastic Surgery?
In cases of age, surgeons mainly look at the patient’s health to see if they’re a candidate for plastic surgery. If an individual is healthy and surgery can be performed under safe conditions, then the upper limits of surgery for a patient undergoing a facelift could be into the mid-80s. The consensus over the years has been the optimum timing to have your first surgical rejuvenation would be around the mid-50s for a facelift. At this age, facial tissues are in good condition, and a person’s appearance is not significantly aged. These characteristics make it so the results aren’t too dramatic. Patients who desire a noticeable but subtle change may start at this age. There has also been a recent trend towards maintenance procedures. For example, a patient may come in his or her mid-40s to get treatment around the eyes (blepharoplasty) as their first procedure, and then potentially, in the early 50s, treatment focusing on the cheek and jawline area. As age progresses into the late 50s and beyond, then a facelift, would be more appropriate, which includes improvement in the cheeks, jawline, and neck.
