The neck is one of the first areas to show the signs of aging. In addition, extreme weight loss can leave the neck area very loose and uncharacteristic of the new body proportions. Neck lift surgery is one of the most effective ways to lift and rejuvenate the neck for a youthful appearance. This facial cosmetic surgery is often combined with a facelift or other plastic surgery procedures, although it can be performed alone.
Some neck lift patients who come in from Dearborn, West Bloomfield, and Detroit may opt for a combination of procedures that target sagging neck skin and loose skin, underlying fatty tissue, weakened neck muscles, and low jawline definition. What are your neck treatment options? Is it the excess fat, sagging skin, or muscle that is causing your aesthetic concerns? Learn more about this cosmetic procedure:
Who is a Good Candidate for a Neck Lift Surgery (Lower Rhytidectomy)?
A good candidate for a neck lift surgery is typically someone who is experiencing visible signs of aging in the lower face and neck area, such as sagging skin, excess fatty deposits beneath the chin, or the appearance of prominent vertical bands caused by lax platysma muscles. Ideal candidates are generally in good overall health, are non-smokers or willing to quit prior to surgery, and have realistic expectations about what the procedure can achieve. Most patients seeking this surgery are between their 40s and 70s, though age alone is not the determining factor.
Beyond physical considerations, the best candidates are those whose skin still retains some degree of elasticity, as this contributes to smoother, more natural-looking results. Candidates should also be at a stable weight, since significant weight fluctuations after the procedure can compromise your results.
A thorough neck lift consultation with our team is the essential first step in determining whether a lower rhytidectomy is the right choice for your.

The Neck Lift Procedure
Most of the procedures utilized for improving the neck are performed through an incision placed under the chin and an incision in the back of the ears. To achieve the desired result and improve the neck and jawline, a combination of procedures is necessary to help tighten and realign the muscle tissue (platysmaplasty), and remove excess skin and fatty tissue (submental lipectomy). In younger patients, where there is only localized fat under the chin and muscle tightening is not necessary, liposuction can be used. After the fat is removed by suction, the skin usually shrinks to the new contour of the neck. A cervicoplasty is performed when there is too much excess skin that cannot be removed by incisions under the chin or behind the ear. This procedure involves additional incisions on the neck and is usually only performed on men.
A neck lift can also be combined with a number of other cosmetic procedures, including a facelift, brow lift, eyelid surgery (eyelid lift), and more.
3-4 Weeks
How long is Neck Lift recovery?
Back to work: 10 to 14 days. Strenuous activity: 3 to 4 weeks. Bruising: 2 to 3 weeks. Must limit exposure to sun for several months.
Neck Lift Results
Following a neck lift surgery, your can expect to see an immediate improvement in the contour and definition of the neck and jawline, though the most refined results will not be fully visible until swelling and bruising have subsided. The initial recovery period typically takes about two to three weeks, during which you may notice some tightness, numbness, and mild discomfort. Most people feel comfortable returning to light daily activities within ten to fourteen days, while more strenuous exercise and physical activity should be avoided for at least four to six weeks. Residual swelling can persist for several months, and the final, settled results are often not fully seen until three to six months after the procedure.
When it comes to longevity, neck lift results are considered among the more lasting outcomes in facial plastic surgery. Most patients enjoy their improved appearance for seven to ten years or more, depending on factors such as genetics, skin quality, lifestyle habits, and sun exposure. Maintaining a stable weight and following a consistent skincare routine can help preserve results over time. It is worth noting that a neck lift does not halt the natural aging process, so some gradual changes will continue to occur. However, patients who have had the procedure will generally continue to look younger relative to their age compared to those who have not.
