Straith Clinic Medi-Spa: Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that exfoliates the skin of its top layer of dead and dry skin cells. This allows the body to replace them with cells that are new and fresh. This can help address a wide variety of skin concerns. With no downtime and noticeable results after each treatment, microdermabrasion is a great option for nearly any skin type. Here’s what to know about this option and how it can help.

Your Microdermabrasion Consultation

If you are considering microdermabrasion, you’ll have a consultation with either Dr. Sabbagh or Dr. Baca. They will discuss your skincare goals and begin creating the right treatment package for you. Our team can recommend additional treatments and products to boost your results along with microdermabrasion. In the few days before treatment, you should avoid the sun and harsh skin treatments such as waxing. On the morning of your microdermabrasion procedure, you should wash your face gently and not wear makeup.

The Microdermabrasion Session

During the microdermabrasion session, your technician uses a handheld device to exfoliate away the top layer of the skin. The device often uses tiny crystals of aluminum oxide, a diamond tip, or jets of air or water to do this. As the skin is exfoliated, a tiny vacuum cannula sucks away the debris.

The treatment usually lasts between 30 minutes and an hour. The treatment not only prompts the production of new skin cells, but it also promotes collagen regeneration.  Collagen is an important component of the skin – a springy protein that lies at the base of the skin and helps keep skin supple. Together, these two effects can address many different skin concerns with regular treatments.

The Recovery Process

Once the microdermabrasion process is complete, sunscreen and moisturizer are applied to the skin. You’ll be given instructions to follow to care for your skin in the days following the procedure. You should also stay out of the sun and avoid rooms that are hot and humid. You should also avoid using certain active ingredients, like acne medications, on the skin for at least 24 hours. During your consultation, you will be able to review any skincare products you regularly use so you know how to navigate your brief recovery period.

Most patients benefit from a package of treatments.  During your consultation, you’ll discuss how often you should return for maintenance treatments. In most cases, one microdermabrasion treatment per month is enough to maintain clear, healthy skin.
