Breast augmentation, also known as breast implant surgery or augmentation mammoplasty, near Dearborn and West Bloomfield is performed to increase breast size and fullness. It’s often combined with a breast lift in patients who also have sagging breasts. Uneven breast volume may also be improved using different volumes in each breast implant. The exact breast size cannot be guaranteed. The breast size depends upon the amount of tissue available to cover the implant, the patient’s stature, and the judgment of your trusted plastic surgeon.
Which Breast Procedure Is Right For Me?
Dr. Marissa Baca explains the different types of breast procedures that patients at the Straith Clinic may be interested in.
The Breast Augmentation Procedure
An incision is made in the fold of the skin below the breast. The breast tissue is elevated from the rib cage, a surgical “pocket” is constructed under either the breast tissue or pectoral muscle, and the implant is placed into this “pocket”.
Candidates for Breast Augmentation Surgery
The ideal candidate for breast augmentation surgery is any individual in good overall health seeking to improve the appearance of their breasts. You must maintain realistic expectations and are not pregnant or breastfeeding if you choose to undergo breast augmentation. Most women will have this procedure done because of shape or volume loss in the breasts due to pregnancy, weight loss, or aging. Other reasons that someone may seek out a breast augmentation are because they are unhappy with the fullness at the top of their breasts, or they have asymmetrical breasts.

Breast Implant Options
When it comes to choosing the type of breast implant for your breast implant procedure, there are three main options. The first is the saline breast implant. Saline implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution that the body will reabsorb in the event of a rupture. They are uniform in shape, firmness, and feel.
The next type of implant to be aware of is the silicone breast implant. Silicone gel implants feel the most like natural breast tissue of all implant types. If you experience a silicone breast implant rupture, it will not cause a collapse in the appearance of the breast.
The last option is a gummy bear breast implant. These implants are thicker and heavier than traditional silicone gel but will retain their shape even if the silicone implant shell is broken. They have a distinct shape, with fullness at the bottom and more tapered toward the top.

Saline or Silicone Implants
At the Straith Clinic, both silicone and saline breast implants in a variety of shapes are utilized. Our board-certified plastic surgeons, Dr. Sabbagh and Dr. Baca, will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each type, ensuring the right implant for your needs.
Subglandular Placement
Subglandular placement of breast implants means the implant is placed under the breast tissue in front of the muscle. The muscle is not stretched or disturbed when the implant is inserted. This placement is best for those wanting a faster recovery and a more natural look. It is also a better placement for highly athletic or active women, as the pectoral muscles are manipulated during surgery.
Submuscular Placement
Submuscular placement means that the breast implant is inserted under the pectoral muscles. This is recommended for particularly thin or lean women, as the chest muscle is more able to conceal the implant’s characteristics. Because the implant is placed under the muscle, upper body movements and aggressive exercise can lead to breast implant movement or “animation.”
3-6 weeks
How long is recovery from breast augmentation?
During recovery from breast augmentation surgery, patients can often return to work within 5-7 days, resume physical contact with the breast after 3-4 weeks, and resume strenuous activity after 3-6 weeks. Recovery can be discussed during your breast augmentation consultation with Dr. Sabbagh or Dr. Baca.
What are the Risks of Breast Augmentation Surgery?
No surgical procedure is risk-free, and that includes plastic surgery like breast augmentation surgery. During your consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons, they will review the risks so you can make an educated decision.
