The lower body lift is a specialized surgical procedure that can be beneficial for many people in Dearborn, West Bloomfield, and the metro Detroit areas. Massive weight loss, childbirth, gravity,
and natural aging can all cause the skin to stretch over time, leading to loose skin and loss of definition in the abdomen, inner thighs, back, and buttocks. Board-certified plastic surgeons, Drs. Baca and Sabbagh can address all of these areas with a single, innovative lower body lift procedure.
What is a Lower Body Lift?
The lower body lift is a comprehensive plastic surgery procedure that tightens loose skin and removes excess or sagging skin to contour the entire lower body and for a 360 degree silhouette improvement. Essentially, the procedures of tummy tuck, lateral thigh lift, belt lipectomy, and buttock lift are combined in this surgical procedure to effectively address the entire lower body – front and back. The abdominal muscles are tightened to strengthen the core
and create a more toned appearance. Liposuction can also be included in the lower body lift to eliminate excess fat that is resistant to diet and exercise and further refine the body contour. The lower body lift can sometimes be combined with upper body or breast procedures for patients seeking a full-body transformation. In other situations, upper body procedures are best spaced out as a separate surgery. A unique plan will be created for you at your consultation.
Areas Treated by a Lower Body Lift
A lower body lift can address multiple regions simultaneously in a single surgical session. Unlike targeted procedures that focus on one isolated area, a lower body lift takes a comprehensive approach, reshaping and tightening the entire circumference of the lower torso. Understanding which areas are treated helps patients set realistic expectations and appreciate the full scope of what this procedure can achieve. Some of the areas it can treat include:
- Abdomen
- Waistline
- Buttocks
- Hips
- Outer Thighs
- Flanks and Lower Back
Lower Body Lift After Weight Loss
Losing a significant amount of weight is a profound achievement, but for many patients, the journey does not feel complete when loose, excess skin remains. After massive weight loss, whether achieved through bariatric surgery, a medically supervised program, or dedicated lifestyle changes, the skin often lacks the elasticity to contract and conform to the body’s new shape. The result is hanging folds of skin around the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, hips, and lower back that cannot be resolved through diet or exercise alone. Weight loss patients have dedicated themselves to the lifestyle changes that brought them weight loss success – they deserve comprehensive, specialized treatment, which usually translates to advanced surgical techniques. A lower body lift addresses these concerns directly, removing the multiple dimensions and areas of redundant skin that weight loss leaves behind and revealing the slimmer contours that patients have worked so hard to achieve.

Who is a Good Candidate?
The best candidates for a lower body lift surgery are healthy adults who have experienced significant weight loss and are bothered by sagging skin and stubborn fat on the lower abdomen, lower back, outer thighs, and buttocks. Patients should be in overall good health, at a stable weight, and non-smokers. At your consultation with board-certified plastic surgeons Dr. Baca and Dr. Sabbagh, your medical history will be discussed in detail to determine whether the lower body lift is right for you.
The Procedure
The lower body lift can be performed under IV sedation at our on-site surgical center or under general anesthesia in a hospital setting. Both of these options can be discussed at your consultation, and our plastic surgeon will help you determine the best choice for your procedure. During lower body lift surgery, incisions will be made long the bikini line, following along to the crease of the upper buttocks and back around to the other side. Scars are kept low so that they can be easily concealed. The underlying tissues and muscles will be tightened, and the excess tissue will be carefully pulled to create a naturally tightened appearance that shows off your underlying contours.
Lower Body Lift Recovery
Swelling, bruising, and soreness are common after lower body lifts, but slowly improve over the first month. Full resolution of swelling takes 3-6 months. Patients will be instructed on compression garment use to help with swelling. Prescription pain medication will be provided to ease your discomfort. Most patients can return to non-physically strenuous work in 2 weeks, but more strenuous activities should be avoided for 4-6 weeks. Significant improvements can be seen immediately after surgery, but it can take up to one year for complete results to develop. Results will last many years but may be affected by aging, gravity, and weight fluctuations. Combining a
Lower Body Lift with Other Procedures
For patients pursuing comprehensive body contouring after significant weight loss or the physical changes brought on by aging and pregnancy, a lower body lift may be performed in combination with other procedures to maximize results in a single surgical experience. Breast procedures, including a breast lift or augmentation, are a possible addition, particularly
for women whose breasts have lost volume and shape following pregnancy or substantial weight loss. For men, chest contouring procedures are sometimes combined with lower body lift surgery.

What Are the Risks?

Lower Body Lift vs. Tummy Tuck: What’s the Difference?
When exploring body contouring options, patients often find themselves weighing a lower body lift against a tummy tuck, and while both procedures address unwanted skin and tissue in the midsection, the scope of each surgery is quite different. A tummy tuck focuses exclusively on the front of the body, removing excess skin and fat of the abdomen while tightening weakened or separated abdominal muscles. It is an excellent solution for patients whose primary concern is a protruding or loose abdomen, such as mothers following pregnancy or individuals who have lost a moderate amount of weight. However, a tummy tuck does not address the back, flanks, buttocks, or thighs. A lower body lift, by contrast, is a procedure that treats the entire lower torso in one operation. The incision wraps all the way around the body, allowing the surgeon to lift and tighten not only the abdomen but also the outer thighs, buttocks, hips, flanks, and lower back simultaneously. This makes it the preferred choice for patients who have experienced massive weight loss, as loose skin in these cases rarely confines itself to one area. While a lower body lift is a more extensive surgery with a longer recovery period, it delivers a far more dramatic and comprehensive transformation than a tummy tuck alone.
Financing Options for Your Lower Body Lift
For many patients, a lower body lift represents a significant financial investment, and understanding the available payment options can make the path to surgery feel far more accessible. Our office offers CareCredit to allow patients to spread the cost of their procedure across manageable monthly payments rather than paying the full amount upfront. It is important for patients to understand that a lower body lift is typically considered an elective cosmetic procedure, meaning health insurance will not cover the cost.
