Types of Breast Implants
Read: Saline, Silicone, or Fat Transfer?
One big decision you will make on your way to enhanced breasts is what type of implants you will have. Each has different benefits and the type you choose will depend on your specific goals for the look and feel of your new breasts.
You might choose a saline-filled implant if you want minimal scarring after your procedure. Saline implants can be placed through a small incision and then filled to the appropriate size. Saline implants don’t feel quite as natural as other implant types and have a slightly higher chance of rupturing. A rupture with a saline implant would be apparent right away and the solution is safe to be absorbed by the body.
Silicone gel-filled implants are a popular choice due to their natural look and feel. Silicone implants require a larger incision because they must be filled prior to placement. If a rupture were to occur, the implant would hold its shape, making it difficult to detect and possible for the gel to leak into the body.
Gummy bear implants offer a new option. The implants are firm so they don’t feel as natural but hold their shape well. These implants are the best choice if you are concerned about a rupture. During a rupture with a gummy bear implant, the gel will stay in place and not leak out into the body.
Placement Options
After deciding which type of implants you will use, you will decide where they will be placed. You might choose to have them placed under the pectoral muscle. This requires a longer surgery and more healing time, but the results will be most likely be more natural, depending on your physical anatomy. Your other option is to have your implants placed under the breast tissue. Your surgery with this placement will be quicker and recovery will be simpler, however, implants may be more noticeable and less supported.
Adding a Breast Lift
Finally, you will have the option to combine a lift with your breast augmentation procedure. If you have naturally small breasts or are dealing with a loss of volume after pregnancy, weight loss, or age, the right size implants might be enough to give you the breasts you want. But if you have extra skin and sagging or nipples that point downward, these could be signs you need to an add a lift. A breast lift can reposition your breasts to a perky, youthful position.
