Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)
Male breast reduction helps to get rid of excess fatty tissue that is causing men to have larger breasts. This is a condition known as gynecomastia. It is a condition that affects adolescent and older men. It often goes away on its own, but if it is persistent then many men turn to surgical solutions to regain their masculine contours. At Straith Clinic we offer male breast reduction to our patients who have gynecomastia.
What to Expect
- Anesthesia – Usually local with IV sedation
- Length of Surgery – 1 to 2 hours
- In / Outpatient – Generally out-patient in our accredited on-site surgery center
During this breast reduction surgery, an incision is made following the lower border of the areola and the excess breast tissue is removed. The incision usually heals with very little noticeable scarring. When the composition of the breasts is mostly fat, liposuction can be performed instead of excision. In some cases, the combination of both procedures is performed.

Can guys develop breasts?
Enlarged breasts in men is a condition called gynecomastia. It can have a variety of causes. Most men develop it during puberty and it subsequently goes away. For some men, gynecomastia does not go away or develops later in life.
Can gynecomastia grow back after surgery?
It’s possible for gynecomastia to come back if the underlying causes aren’t addressed. It can return because of later weight fluctuations or drug use, for example.
Can thyroid problems cause gynecomastia?
Thyroid problems can be related to gynecomastia because they can impact hormone levels. Hormones can be responsible for male breast growth, so it’s important to explore the underlying causes with your plastic surgeon and primary care physician.
Can you get rid of gynecomastia without surgery?
It’s possible for gynecomastia to go away on its own in some men. It can sometimes be treated by switching medications or stopping drug use, for example. In some cases, surgery is required to get rid of gynecomastia.
Do you lose weight after breast reduction?
Male breast reduction is not considered a weight loss surgery and any weight loss from surgical removal would be minimal.
Does a breast reduction make you look thinner?
Male breast reduction can achieve a flatter, more masculine chest. It can also be combined with other body contouring procedures like a tummy tuck or liposuction if you want to achieve a thinner, more defined figure.
Does gynecomastia go away with weight loss?
Gynecomastia will go away with weight loss if it’s primarily caused by excess fatty tissue. If it’s caused by enlarged breast tissue, then it will not go away with weight loss.
Does gynecomastia surgery leave scars?
Gynecomastia surgery will leave scars like any other procedure. However, our board-certified plastic surgeons can ensure any scarring is hidden within the natural contours of your body. Also, most scars will fade over time and with silicone scar treatments.
How can gynecomastia be prevented?
In some cases, gynecomastia can be prevented by maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding recreational drugs, or switching certain medications. Make sure to consult your regular physician before stopping or switching any medications.
How can you tell the difference between gynecomastia and Pseudogynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is caused by enlarged breast tissue while pseudogynecomastia is caused by fat. Gynecomastia will typically feel firmer and more like a female breast than pseudogynecomastia.
How do I know if I have gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia typically appears like female breasts even if you’re at an otherwise healthy weight. Gynecomastia is sometimes confused with pseudogynecomastia and it’s important to get a diagnosis from your plastic surgeon to determine your best surgical options.
How do I know if I need a breast reduction?
Male breast reduction is the best option for men who don’t see results with other gynecomastia treatments or lifestyle adjustments. If you’re bothered by the appearance of enlarged breasts or are uncomfortable taking your shirt off in situations where it’s normal, gynecomastia surgery can help.
