  • Fading of Scars – Several months to one year
  • Duration of Results – Liposuction resultsvary in duration, but gravity, aging, and weight changes easily affect them.

Liposuction Benefits

Liposuction remains a popular choice for body contouring around the country each year. Among its many benefits are:

  • Permanent results
  • Enhanced body contours
  • Targeted fat removal
  • Boosted confidence
  • Expanded clothing options
  • Better mobility
  • Customizability and versatility

The Procedure & Best Candidates

Liposuction is not a cure for obesity and essentially is not a substitute for weight reduction. The best candidates are patients who are within 30 percent of their optimal weight with good skin elasticity. It is also important that patients are non-smokers with specific goals for their body contouring procedure. The tumescent technique involves injecting the areas of fat to be removed with a solution of saline and local anesthetic. This numbs the area, decreases blood loss, and allows for easier fat removal. This technique is considered the “traditional” form of liposuction and produces reliable results for patients with basic fat removal needs.

Assisted Liposuction

Liposuction alternatives are becoming more available each year. They can offer many additional benefits and Drs. Sabbagh and Baca will help you select the best option.

Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction

Ultrasonic-assisted liposuction in West Bloomfield is a procedure that uses the tumescent technique and high-frequency sound waves to liquefy the fat, which is then aspirated. It is used on selective body areas. A thin tube, called a cannula, is then inserted through small incisions to dislodge fat cells using a back-and-forth motion. The surgical vacuum attached to the cannula suctions excess fat away.

Liposuction Combination Procedures

Liposuction is most commonly combined with other procedures to enhance results. Some of the most common liposuction combination procedures include:

Fat Transfer

During fat transfer, liposuction is the first stage of treatment. Fat tissue is collected before being injected into areas like the face or breasts to enhance fullness, restore youthful volume, or correct asymmetries.

Tummy Tuck

Liposuction is often combined with the tummy tuck to further contour the area. While the tummy tuck addresses the stomach, liposuction can remove pockets of fat from surrounding areas such as the hips or thighs to create a more comprehensively improved figure.

Mommy Makeover

The mommy makeover combines multiple procedures such as liposuction, breast augmentation, and tummy tuck. These are designed to restore your body to its pre-pregnancy state and reverse many of the effects of childbearing.

Liposuction Recovery

Following liposuction, patients must wear compression garments in the treatment area to help heal and prevent swelling. Healing will be gradual; most patients can return to work within a few days of surgery. Patients must stay out of the sun for at least six weeks to prevent scarring. Following Dr. Sabbagh’s post-operative instructions is important for a quick and safe recovery.

Results of Liposuction

After liposuction, you will see a noticeable improvement in your body’s contours and overall appearance. These results can be long-lasting if you maintain a healthy and active lifestyle to prevent weight gain. For many patients, liposuction results can be life-changing and significantly improve their confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get liposuction if I am overweight?

Your plastic surgeon will examine you and evaluate whether liposuction is appropriate to remove fat in stubborn areas, or if weight loss will be needed before surgery.

Can visceral fat be removed?

No, visceral fat is fat within your abdominal cavity surrounding your organs. This fat cannot be surgically removed.

Are you put to sleep for liposuction?

Yes, you are sedated for the liposuction procedure.

Does a tummy tuck remove fat?

Yes, a tummy tuck removes skin and fat together in the area of the lower abdomen. Sometimes, a tummy tuck can be combined with liposuction of other areas to remove fat in those areas and complete your body contouring goals.

How can I avoid weight gain after surgery?

A balanced lifestyle with healthy eating habits and exercise is important to avoiding weight gain and maintaining your postsurgical results.

How long do you drain after lipo?

Drainage after liposuction can last anywhere from 1-3 days.

How long do you need off work after liposuction?

If you have a physically strenuous job, you may need 1-2 weeks off from work. If you do not have a physically strenuous job, or you have the ability to work from home, you may only need a few days oof from work. Remember, the more areas of the body you have treated, the more soreness and swelling you may have, which can impact how long you want/need to take off from work.

Is liposuction an outpatient procedure?

Most liposuction procedures are outpatient.

Who is good candidate for liposuction?

Ideal candidates for liposuction are close to their target weight, but just have a stubborn area of extra fat. Good liposuction candidates have suitable skin elasticity and firmness, and have good muscle tone. Candidates should also be in good overall health and maintain realistic expectations regarding the results of liposuction.

Is Lipo permanent?

The fat removed during liposuction will be gone permanently, but that doesn’t mean new fat cannot build up. A healthy diet and exercise routine should be maintained after liposuction.
