After significant weight loss, sagging skin is normal, but it leaves many people self-conscious. Body contouring surgery after major weight loss removes excess skin and remaining stubborn fat pockets to reveal the contoured body underneath that you have worked so hard for. This helps patients feel more comfortable and confident in their newly toned and slimmer bodies. At the Straith Clinic, we offer weight loss body contouring surgery to patients in West Bloomfield, Dearborn, and the surrounding metro Detroit areas. Both Dr. Sabbagh or our Female Plastic Surgeon Dr. Baca look forward to helping you feel more confident.

Medical Weight Loss

There are many ways that people can lose weight, but semaglutide injections have been recently growing in popularity. Semaglutide is in a class of medications known as glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs). It mimics the GLP-1 hormone, which signals when we are full to regulate our appetite. By triggering the body to feel full sooner, people will eat less and can lose weight quickly and easily. Weight Loss Contouring Surgery

Although the weight loss journey has many physical and emotional benefits, many people are left with significant amounts of sagging skin. This is because the skin is stretched over time and cannot completely shrink back at the same rate of fat cells being lost. Excess skin is not only bothersome because of its appearance. Significant skin sagging on the abdomen, breasts, thighs, back, or upper arms can also cause discomfort and decreased mobility. Weight loss contouring, also known as body contouring surgery, can target each of these areas, depending on your individual needs and treatment goals. After surgery, your skin will feel and look smoother and tighter to accentuate your body’s natural contours.

Traditional Weight Loss vs. Medical Weight Loss

Weight loss can be achieved in many ways, and the method used often impacts how the body looks afterward. Traditional weight loss through diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes often occurs gradually. While this approach supports a healthy lifestyle and gives the skin more time to adjust, many patients are still left with loose skin or skin folds, especially after major weight loss.

By contrast, medical weight loss with medications like semaglutide or after bariatric surgery may cause rapid weight loss. In these cases, the skin stretches more dramatically and often cannot retract on its own, leaving behind excess sagging skin. Patients who achieve their goal weight with the help of a healthcare provider or bariatric surgeons often consider plastic surgery such as body contouring procedures or excess skin removal surgery to reveal their new figure.

Tummy Tuck for Excess Abdominal Skin

One of the most common concerns after significant weight loss is sagging skin around the abdomen. A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and excess fat from the lower belly while tightening weakened abdominal muscles. This procedure not only improves the contour of the lower stomach but also helps reduce discomfort from skin folds that may cause irritation.

Arm Lift to Remove Sagging Upper Arms

Sagging skin on the upper arms, sometimes called “bat wings”, is a common result of weight loss. An arm lift (brachioplasty) is a body contouring surgery designed to remove extra skin and sculpt slimmer, firmer arms. By removing excess tissue and tightening the underlying tissue, patients can enjoy improved definition and feel more comfortable wearing short sleeves or fitted clothing.

Thigh Lift for Inner Thigh Contouring

The inner and outer thighs are another area frequently affected by excess sagging skin after weight loss surgery or bariatric surgery. A thigh lift removes loose skin and excess fat from the inner thighs, creating a smoother, firmer contour. For patients who experience chafing, irritation, or skin rashes from excess skin, this procedure also provides significant relief.

Who is a Good Candidate?

The best candidates for weight loss contouring are people who have lost a significant amount of weight and kept a stable weight for several months. Patients should also be in good overall health with realistic expectations for their surgical results. At your consultation, we will review your medical history to make sure you are a good surgical candidate.

Signs You Might Be Ready for Weight Loss Body Contouring

Many patients wonder when the right time is to consider body contouring after weight loss. You may be ready if:

  • You have reached your goal weight and maintained a stable weight for several months.
  • You are bothered by loose skin, skin folds, or sagging skin that will not improve with diet or exercise.
  • You experience discomfort, skin rashes, or reduced mobility caused by excess skin.
  • You have realistic expectations and are committed to maintaining results through a healthy lifestyle.

Common Areas Treated by Weight Loss Body Contouring

Body contouring procedures can be tailored to address almost any area affected by dramatic weight loss, including:

  • Abdomen and lower belly
  • Upper arms
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Breasts
  • Back and flanks
  • Buttocks
  • Circumferential lower body

Each procedure is designed to remove excess skin, tighten underlying tissue, and restore natural, balanced proportions.

The Procedure

Weight loss contouring is performed by Dr. Baca or Dr. Sabbagh at our on-site surgical center. Body contouring procedures such as tummy tuck, arm lift, thigh lift, breast lift, and breast augmentation may be a good option to remove the excess tissue on different areas of the body and allow patients from West Bloomfield and Detroit, MI, to fully enjoy their new look.  Liposuction may also be included to remove stubborn pockets of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise.

During each of these contouring procedures, excess skin will be carefully removed from various areas of the body, and the remaining skin will be pulled tightly into place. The incisions will be placed along the bikini line, under the arms, and along the inner thighs, where the scars can be easily concealed.

Lower Body Lift

The post weight circumferential abdominoplasty, also known as lower body lift surgery, is well suited for patients that are looking for simultaneous improvement in the abdomen, outer thighs, and buttocks.  The actual procedure combines body sculpting procedures such as an abdominoplasty, a buttock lift, and a lateral thigh lift, which can be performed in one surgical operation. It can remove loose skin, tighten underlying tissue, and remove excess fat for a more defined figure and improved contour. This makes it a standard addition to surgical body contouring procedures.

Benefits of Body Contouring After Weight Loss

Undergoing body contouring surgery after major weight loss offers many benefits beyond aesthetics:

hourglass2-3 weeks

Weight Loss Contouring Recovery

After weight loss contouring, moderate swelling and bruising are common. A significant amount of swelling will improve within the first month, but swelling will continue to resolve over the first 3-6 months. Patients will be instructed on compression garment use to help with swelling. Most patients can comfortably return to light activities or non-physically strenuous jobs after 2 weeks. However, strenuous exercise should be avoided for about four to six weeks. Recovery time and post-operative instructions will be discussed in greater detail at your consultation so that you can feel prepared for every step of your surgery.

What Are the Risks?

All surgical procedures pose some risk, but our board-certified plastic surgeons are among the best in the Detroit, MI, area. With nearly 50 years of combined experience, Dr. William Sabbagh and Dr. Marissa Baca have performed hundreds of successful procedures with exceptional results. At your consultation, possible risks will be discussed so that you can make an educated decision about your treatment plan.
